Residents are up in arms after the head of one of Australia’s iconic “big things” was mysteriously stolen.
Locals at Crangan Bay on the NSW Central Coast learned last week their “big prawn” had been beheaded.
The prawn, which looms over the Big T Roadhouse, was damaged sometime between August 4-5.
While there has not been a report to police, locals suspect the head was removed with an angle grinder.
“The head of the big prawn was sawn off by an angle grinder and removed,” a resident wrote on Facebook.
“There’s evidence of the angle grinder use on the ground below.”
The prawn has been a local fixture since 1991, having escaped past disasters in the area.
In 2013, the adjoining roadhouse at Frazer Park was raised to the ground during bushfires.
The prawn later drew the attention of the nearby Central Coast Council who wanted to buy the figure.
Then-councillor Jillian Hogan told the ABC in 2020 purchasing the prawn would get “some attention”.
The prawn is not as well known as Ballina’s own big prawn, one of the country’s notable “big things”.
The “big banana” in Coffs Harbour and “big Merino” in Goulburn are other notable attractions in NSW.
